On January 15, the delegations from Digital Agency attended JAPAN-ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting held in Ha Noi, Viet Nam.
Overview
During the meeting, participants addressed cooperation between Japan and ASEAN on digital policy. As part of the “Digital Work Plan,” one of the agreed areas of collaboration, they discussed this year’s work plan for initiatives aimed at promoting Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT), led by the Digital Agency.
Specifically, the Digital Agency outlined its focus on four key areas: "secure data sharing through technology such as Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs)", "promotion of cross-border transfers of personal data," "enhancing transparency of regulations," and "data governance for developping AI." In response, ASEAN countries recognized the importance of these initiatives and highlighted specific measures such as promoting the use of global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) and Model Contractual Clauses (MCCs) and raising awareness of PETs.
Furthermore, taking opportunity of the meeting, participants held meetings with senior officials from Singapore and the United States (ASEAN dialogue partners, like Japan) to exchange views on advancing DFFT, with a focus on the ASEAN region.
Through these initiatives, the Digital Agency will continue to advance DFFT in the ASEAN region.
