Background of the Establishment of Digital Agency
In 2020, in the process of responding to the novel coronavirus infection, various issues related to digitalization were revealed throughout society, including delays in digitalization at the national and local governments, a shortage of human resources, administrative inefficiency due to systems that do not work well together, and delays in complicated procedures and benefits.
In order to solve these problems, it was necessary to break down the barriers between the ministries and to carry out bold reforms.
It was Digital Agency who considered establishing an organization that would play a central role in the reform. On September 1, 2021, under the SUGA Yoshihide administration, Digital Agency was officially established as a control tower for the formation of a digital society.

In addition to planning and general coordination for the formation of a digital society, the Act on the Establishment of the Digital Agency (Act No. 36 of 2021) stipulates that it will be involved in the promotion of measures for digitalization undertaken by related administrative agencies. Human resources from diverse backgrounds and expertise, both public and private, will gather and work in cooperation with all related parties, including ministries, local governments, and private companies, to realize a society where the benefits of digitalization are spread to all citizens.
